In this short review video, I look at the MMB Box 2.0, a wireless adapter that has a physical switch on the side.

You can buy this adapter directly from MMB store store https://bit.ly/mmbbox2

The Box 2.0 is the latest new wireless adapter from MMB. It supports both wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, each can be toggled by its physical smart button that’s located on the side of its casing. Simply switch the switch to either AA for Android Auto or CP for CarPlay and reboot the adapter to connect your chosen device to it.

This switch, in a way, allows for reduced false connections to the wrong device, should you be sharing the car with a driver that has a device on the other platform. If you both have the same issue, you face the same multi-device woes as any other adapter.

Connection is as simple as pairing with the adapter over Bluetooth. Total boot time into CarPlay was 20 seconds and 23 seconds into Android Auto. Making the Box 2.0 one of the fastest wireless adapters I’ve tested. In comparison, its speed is 2 seconds slower than the CarlinKit 5.0 in Android Auto, yet the Box 2.0 is the fastest adapter into CarPlay by 3 seconds.

Boot up into main menu and CP and AA times

Once connected, the Box 2.0 performs very well on both platforms, especially considering its lower Wi-Fi sepcs (see image below). It is surprisingly rapid, and very responsive with touch input and interaction. Resolution is kept intact (more importantly for Android Auto) and generally, this adapter has felt like this is the best it can get when using CarPlay or Android Auto wirelessly. Audio and calling sound decent with low enough delay (you’ll never beat wired), and overall, this adapter is well recommended for its overall performance verses the competition.

Wi-Fi Spec Tests

It does, however, get marked down for its lack of configuration options. There is the usually IP config menu – new to other MMB adapters I’ve tested, but options lead to just delay in start up and its ability to check for updates and reset to factory settings. There is no GPS passthrough support, and without an SD slot or USB port, any future updates have to be done over the air, which is risky to carry out sometimes.

Retailing on sale for $80 using my 10%-off coupon carplaylife from the MMB store, this adapter is ideally suited for anyone looking for a good-performing wireless adapter for both Apple and Google devices. Its unfortunate that the switch doesn’t really give you the full control over multi-device use – that holy grail has still yet to be grasped. The Box 2.0 from MMB is a return to form from MMB, well done.
