In this review, I look at the EVDance Wall Plug Socket to Type 2 Portable EV Charger. You can currently buy this portable EV charger (6m/20ft cable) directly from EVDance for £124 with 20%-off code EVDANTHON – https://shrsl.com/4rgrt. Also from £113.04 at Amazon UK – https://amzn.to/3CCZ5Bz, from $119.99 at Amazon US – https://amzn.to/40YEIc5 and from €118.99 at Amazon DE – https://amzn.to/40XqIPN.
UK Users: Setting the charger to 10 Amps is highly recommended, because many UK wall sockets can’t take a constant supply of the 13A charging rate. If you wish to try charging at 13 Amps, make sure your UK plug socket is capable of supplying 13 Amps constantly without excessive heat or overcharging of the wall socket. Check the plug casing every hour and if it is very warm/hot to the touch, set the charger down to 10A or lower instead.
TLDR: The EVDance Type 2 Portable Charger is a reliable and versatile accessory for EV owners, offering adjustable amp settings, a clear LED display, and multiple cable lengths (6m, 8m, 10m). It’s compact, safe, and ideal for home use or travel, making it a cost-effective alternative to public charging. While it charges slower than a wall charger (10 miles per hour), it’s perfect for light EV use or as a backup solution.
Owning an electric vehicle (EV) is an exciting step toward a more sustainable future, but it comes with its share of challenges—especially when it comes to charging. Whether you’re new to EV ownership or looking to expand your charging options, a portable charging cable is an indispensable accessory.
A portable charger offers the convenience of charging your EV wherever there’s a standard plug socket, avoiding expensive public charging stations. It’s also a lifeline for those who don’t have the space or ability to install a faster 7-22kW home wall charger. Whether you’re planning a holiday, staying in an Airbnb, or simply preparing for unexpected charging needs, having a portable charger in your car can make all the difference.
While waiting for my home charger installation, I decided to try the EVDance Type 2 Portable Charger. Known as one of Amazon UK’s highest-rated portable chargers, it seemed like a promising way to keep my Cupra Born charged and ready—at a fraction of the cost of public charging.
Unboxing and First Impressions
The EVDance charger arrives in a sleek black carry case emblazoned with the brand’s logo. The case is well-made, with padded straps to keep the charger protected when not in use. While it’s a practical solution, I feel the addition of Velcro strips would help prevent it from sliding around in the car boot during travel.
Inside, you’ll find the charger neatly coiled, along with a paper instruction manual. EVDance offers two color options: black and white. I chose white to match my Cupra Born, but it also has a functional advantage—the lighter casing is less likely to overheat when exposed to sunlight outdoors.
The overall build quality of the charger feels robust and well thought out. The connectors are sturdy, and the cable has enough flexibility to make handling easy while still feeling durable enough for repeated use.
Features and Design
The heart of the EVDance charger lies in its compact control box, located 40cm from the wall plug. This small but powerful component regulates the flow of electricity to your EV and provides key information via its 1-inch LED display.
The display shows useful details such as voltage, energy rate (speed) in kW, charging time, total energy added (in kWh), and the current amp setting. Below the screen is a single button that lets you toggle between four charging speeds: 6, 8, 10, and 13 amps. This flexibility allows you to adapt to different charging scenarios, whether you’re plugging into an older socket or maximizing charging speed at a reliable outlet.
Cable lengths are another key consideration when choosing a portable charger. EVDance offers 6m, 8m, and 10m options. While the 6m cable works well for most home setups, the 10m version is ideal for situations where you might need extra reach—such as plugging into a socket at an Airbnb or a family member’s home. Investing in the longer option can save you from relying on extensions, which are less safe for high-power devices like EV chargers.
Performance and Ease of Use
Using the EVDance charger couldn’t be simpler. You plug one end into a standard indoor or outdoor wall socket and the other into your EV’s Type 2 charging port. The charger takes care of the rest, regulating the current and providing clear updates on its LED display.
One of my main concerns with portable chargers was overheating—especially at higher amp settings. To test this, I connected the EVDance charger to my outdoor wall socket and set it to its maximum 13-amp setting for a 10-hour charge. Impressively, the plug remained cool to the touch, even after extended use. This reassured me of the charger’s safety features and build quality.
Charging speeds, while not as fast as a dedicated wall charger, are sufficient for light daily use. At 12-13 amps, the charger delivered a steady 10 miles per hour. This is perfect for someone like me who works from home and doesn’t cover high mileage daily. However, for commuters or drivers with high daily mileage, a faster wall-mounted charger would be a better long-term investment.
I also tested the charger with Intelligent Octopus Go, a popular smart energy tariff. My first-time setup was straightforward: I simply added my Cupra Born EV to the Octopus app (under the “Devices” section), selected the portable EV charger option, and once a test connection was made, my charging schedule was created during the tariff’s off-peak hours (between 11:30 pm and 5:30 am, sometimes it also charged in the day when demand from the grid was low). At just 7p/kWh, the cost savings were significant compared to public charging rates, costing me around £5 for a 17% to 80% charge that will give me around 200-250 miles from my 77kWh battery in the Winter. A return trip from Brighton to Luton Airport for £7 can’t be grumbled at either!
Price and Value
The EVDance charger is competitively priced for its quality and features:
• £139.99 for 6m
• £149.99 for 8m
• £159.99 for 10m
For most users, the 6m option will be sufficient for home use. However, the 10m cable offers greater versatility and future-proofs your setup for situations where a standard socket might not be conveniently located. Avoiding the need for an extension cable not only saves hassle but also eliminates the safety risks associated with overloading an extension lead.
When compared to the cost of public charging or the upfront expense of installing a home wall charger, the EVDance portable charger represents excellent value. Its portability and ease of use make it an ideal choice for new EV owners or as a backup solution for seasoned drivers.
Summary: Is It Worth Buying?
