Since Apple released its MagSafe platform and its own MagSafe wireless charger, we’ve seen a considerable number of magnetic accessories become available for MagSafe compatible iPhones.

This is the ESR HaloLock Kickstand Wireless Charger. It is compatible with MagSafe but it doesn’t display the MagSafe charging animation on the iPhone. Being a Qi charger, it will also charge any other wireless charging devices, including the Apple AirPods charging case.

In the box you get the HaloLock wireless charger base, with its included kickstand underneath. And there is a 5 ft (or 1.5m) USB-C to USB-C charging cable.

Size & Features

The size of the charger is around 2 mm wider around the edges and 2 mm thicker to Apple‘s own MagSafe charger, it comes in black and also in silver too. The black one comes with a black charging cable, whilst the silver one will come with a white one. Its body is made out of an aluminium alloy metal with a tempered glass face to give it that premium feel. I’ll be honest, it does look nicer than Apple’s own MagSafe charger, but with these materials, it is 5grams heavier than Apple’s cheaper looking charger.

On the back, there is a kickstand arm that folds out from the base of the charger. This feature makes it very handy for calling as well as travelling, as you can just attach the base to the back of the iPhone and use it to watch movies, and with a powered cable attached to it, it also doubles as a charger too. The kickstand can be positioned for landscape and portrait orientations, thanks to its straight edge. Although a heavy knock to the table might tip the iPhone over if in portrait mode. In landscape view the kickstand positions the iPhone in a perfect viewing angle, and the hinge is pretty firm enough to be able to hold any other lower angles too. In portrait position, its thin kickstand doesn’t support it as much, and its angle is a little too far back for my liking, also when in portrait, the edge of the metal kickstand sounds like it could scratch any delicate surfaces that you might place it on.

Charging Speeds

There is no bundled wall charger with this accessory, so you have to supply your own. It will accept up to 18 Watts of input, and it will provide up to 15W of wireless charging output.

In reality, I wasn’t able to achieve anything close to 15 Watts with this wireless charger. Connecting the USB cable to an Anker 30 Watt wall adapter I was only able to achieve a max charging rate of 8.45 Watts, whereas the Apple MagSafe charger achieved 8.59 Watts from the same wall adapter. So paired with the right wall adapter there was very little between them.

My Impressions

I like its simple aesthetic and its kickstand feature comes in handy either out and about, or even on your desktop at home, should you wish to prop up your iPhone in landscape mode to stream a movie, or make a video call. I like that you’re not tied to having the cable permanently connected to it like you are with the Apple MagSafe charger and the cable supplied is of a good length if you’re not too close to a wall socket.

It’s unfortunate that I couldn’t get the same level of speeds that you would get with the iPhone MagSafe official MagSafe charger, but maybe if I paired it with a different wall adapter, such as the 20W Apple Charger with its PD profile, it might have been able to get better performance and the speeds that it claims to output.

So if you’re looking for a wireless MagSafe compatible charger with an integrated kickstand then you might want to consider the ESR HaloLock Wireless Charger.
