I like seeing new and unique tech products, so when I was asked to check this out, I was intrigued to see how well it works. This is a 3-in-1 charger with the main unique selling point of being able to individually store and charge your Apple AirPods in your car.
In the box you get the Apple AirPods charger itself and a small quick start manual that tells you everything there is to know about it. There really isn’t much to read about with this charger, because everything is pretty obvious as to how it all works. It simply plugs into your 12-volt socket in the car and you take each of your Apple AirPods and insert them into the moulded charging ports at the top of the charger.
Once inserted, the status indicator begins to flash red to tell you they are being charged. Charging the AirPods takes around 15-20 minutes, and the indicator light then turns green when they become fully charged. Personally, I would have liked to see two individual left and right indicators here. There is a second LED light in the center, but this light tells you that the charger is being powered.
The charging ports for each AirPod are magnetic, so like the official case, once inserted, they hold onto the AirPods and you will not find them coming loose or come flying out. The magnet strength doesn’t feel as strong as the official case, but it is sufficient enough to hold onto them.
Below the AirPod sockets are two USB ports that carry 5 volts at 2.4 amps. They are not QuickCharge or offer Power Delivery, but at 12 Watts each, they are more than enough to charge your connected dash camera, iPhone, or Android device.
Like me, you might be asking: what’s the point of this product, when you can just use its charging case? It is definitely a niche product, but if you’re watching this video you might be one of the very few people that might be looking for a product such as this. Because fully charged AirPods can last more than 24 hours with the charging case, I can only see this charge being useful if you use your AirPods regularly, so you need easy access to them, and you find yourself in the car a lot – such as a taxi driver or chauffeur.
It is definitely a niche product, but if you’re reading this review you might be one of the very few people that might be looking for a product such as this. Because fully charged AirPods can last more than 24 hours using the official Apple AirPod Charging Case, I can only see this charger being useful if you use your AirPods regularly, so you need easy access to them, and you find yourself in the car a lot – such as a taxi driver or chauffeur.
Sadly, when Apple evolves its AirPods its form-factor changes, so this charger will begin to get outdated very quickly. For now, Apple still sells its 2nd generation, cheaper AirPods, but that could all soon change in the future. Its AirPod entry sockets are molded to the first and second generation of AirPods, so will not accept the smaller Apple AirPods Pro, and with the rumors that Apple may update the AirPods in early 2021, you might find this product will get outdated sooner than you think. So bear this in mind if you’re looking to buy this charger and you might replace your current AirPods.
Most Airpod chargers for the car charge the AirPods by attaching its case into the car charger, so this AirPods charger is a unique product that not only creates a home for your AirPods in the car, it charges them too, whilst also being able to charge two other devices through the two USB ports.
The Apple AirPods Charger for your car retails for $14.99 from Amazon. For comparison, Apple’s wireless charging case for these AirPods costs $79 or £79, so if you were to have a separate case in the car or you are buying the wireless case for the first time to extend the battery life of your AirPods, maybe this AirPod Charger might be a decent, cheaper alternative if you find your AirPods are regularly low or out of charge whilst in the car.
