If you’re like me, you will most likely have a number of tried and tested power adapters and in-car USB ports that carry the now older USB-A connection type. From dual sockets to desktop USB-A chargers, these things may have cost you back in the day, and you might feel that you want to keep them just a bit longer.

If you are going to hold on to these older USB-A charging devices, then you’ll need to upgrade your cables if you want to power your latest USB-C tech. Replacing the cable can be a much cheaper option than replacing the while USB charger outright. The Amonor USB-C cable fills this void, allowing you to continue to use your existing charger or USB port in your car, for example, and provide power to your latest tech, be it a new USB-C powered smartphone, the latest MacBook laptop or iPad Pro.

What Amonor have done here is provide not just one, but three USB-A to USB-C cables of various lengths. Inside the rectangular packaging come three cables, including 1-metre, 1.5-metre and a slightly longer 1.8-metre cable. Each cable comes in a braided material sleeve and is capped with a black and space grey connection at either end, that fits well with any Apple device you may plug them in to.

The problem with most stock cables is that the join between the cable and the connector is always the weakest point and it is where most cables break the most. Each Amoner cable has a thick black and space grey braided cable, that prevents you from creating a tight right angle, whilst the connector looks and feels like this cable will last a long while.

Lasting a while is good for your wallet. Especially when the Amonor cable currently cost only £5.99 from Amazon – remember this price is for three cables. Many USB-C cables still carry a premium price. Apple doesn’t officially sell a USB-A to C cable currently, instead they rely on third-party makers like Mophie who sell their 1m cable alone for an eye-watering £19.95!

All three cables from Amoner can transfer data to and from your USB-C devices at speeds of up to 480 Mbps. This isn’t the fastest USB-C cable out there. Transferring an HD movie in less than 1 minute. This classifies this cable as a USB-C 2.0 cable, which has a max speed of 480 Mbps. USB-C 3.0, 3.1 and Thunderbolt 3 can go from 5 Gbps, 10 Gbps, to 40 Gbps respectively.

For most people, the Amoner cables should cater for most tasks, such as transferring small amounts of data or charging devices such as some Android mobiles and tablets. It will charge Apple MacBook, MacBook Air or a 13-inch MacBook Pro, but with limited charging speeds, and it will not be a match to using the dedicated Apple USB-C cable that came with it. I hope in time Amoner upgrades these cables to support USB-C 3.x speeds and provide a 1, 2 and 3 metre-long solution.

If you’re looking to continue the life of your old charger, or you want a cheaper solution to powering your latest USB-C tech with your existing USB-A car charger, check out the Amoner 3 Pack USB-C to USB-A Cable. They not only look great, but their durability will last you a long time too.
