[* Update: The store build of Magic Earth is also displaying its navigation on the home screen dashboard panel, thanks for everyone who pointed this out to me. Check out the latest video on our channel, below, for a quick look at both applications.]
Since the release of the latest Apple CarPlay update with its dashboard view, CarPlay owners have been forced to view just Apple Maps in the navigation panel of the home screen dashboard view. Other navigation apps such as Google Maps, Waze, TomTom and many others are forced to view their navigation apps in full focus, by taking over the entire display screen, whilst Apple Maps continues to display on the home screen dashboard view.
With more recent updates in iOS 13, Apple has soon unlocked the ability for third-party navigation apps to show in the navigation panel of the home screen dashboard view, yet still, to this day we do not have a major navigation app that is able to replace Apple Maps in this panel – until now.
Members of the TomTom Go app beta can now download the latest TestFlight update and have its navigation view show in the home screen dashboard navigation panel. I have tried it, it works and it looks great! There are a few issues I encountered when force closing the app and trying to launch other apps, where the TomTom Go app would still show in this panel when other apps were launch, but as this is a beta I’ll chalk this down as a work in progress.
The TomTom Go app was a late bloomer for Apple CarPlay, with many of its competitors releasing on Apple CarPlay way ahead of its own app. This time around it seems they are on route to being one the first major navigation apps to offer a home screen dashboard panel view to its app. I am not a member of the Waze or Google Maps betas, to see if their latest update also has this ability around the corner.
Hopefully, soon we will have our favourite navigation app displaying on our CarPlay home screen dashboard panel view, likely before iOS 14 comes out. This all works in iOS 13.6. So the wait shouldn’t be that long to go. Exciting!
