Hidden amongst the noise of all the new upcoming features for Apple CarPlay in iOS 13 update, releasing this Fall, there is one major key feature that is slowly revealing itself with many people trying out the first edition of the iOS 13 beta.

iOS 13 will now allow the connected iPhone to display a different app whilst the CarPlay display shows another – Yay! Finally!!

Currently, when switching apps on your iPhone, the CarPlay display will either close or switch to the app on the car display if it is CarPlay compatible. This frustrates many users who would like to, for example, display a navigation app on the CarPlay display whilst swapping music tracks on their iPhone.

You can bypass skipping of audio on steering wheels or function buttons on your head unit display, but doing anything more requires you to swap to the app, which forces the running CarPlay app to close or swap screens – an issue that frustrated many CarPlay owners.

The announcement of this feature comes as a breath of fresh air and it hopefully means that Apple is listening to its users and is slowly deciding to release some functionality improvements to reduce frustration from users of its in-car platform.

The Verge reports that Apple’s decision for this feature was so that “passengers can pick a song on the device while the driver can keep looking at Maps.” They also mention that Apple will make it “possible for automakers to allow CarPlay to show up on other screens (like digital instrument clusters).”

This comes as great news for anyone, including myself, with an aftermarket headunit install that’s blank and empty since it went in. Hopefully, iOS 13 will fix this and cast important information to the instrument cluster, as long as your hardware supports it.

iOS 13 releases to the general public this fall on all iPhones from iPhone 6s and newer, or an iPod Touch 7th Generation. The public beta will launch in July and developers will have access from today.

I hope we can get hands-on with the new Apple CarPlay in iOS 13 real soon. So stay tuned.
