One of the reasons why so many people enjoy playing the lottery is the ease with which they can place their bets. Finding out the results used to be a time-consuming process but it has become far easier in recent years, making the games even easier to enjoy.
How People Traditionally Found Out If They Had Won
The earliest types of lottery-style games involved the participants being there in person to find out if they had won or not. For example, it is believed that the first games of chance of this type took place at Roman dinner parties.
In the 17th century, the English State Lottery began. The numbers were drawn at different places across the country and the fairly expensive cost of the ticket meant this was geared mainly at the upper class. The tickets were sold in colonies, such as in North America, with sales going through private agents who would inform their clients if they had won.
Anyone who bought a lottery ticket for these early state draws had good reason to hang onto it. As well as waiting for word to come through if they had won or not, the certificate also granted them immunity from certain, relatively minor convictions.
In more modern times, newspapers began to show the results of the latest draws, followed by television. The 19th November 1994 saw the National Lottery drawn live on the BBC for the first time. Millions of viewers across the country huddled in front of their TV sets to watch Noel Edmunds present the action.
For at least a decade, the TV shows that presented the live draw were the main way of finding out quickly whether you had won or not. They were extended into Wednesday and Friday nights before being slowly replaced by other methods that gave the results in a faster and more convenient way. In Spain, the El Gordo draw at Christmas is still traditionally shown live on TV.
The Modern Approach
The arrival of the internet has now made it a lot easier for anyone, anywhere in the world, to find out the latest lotto results. A quick look online lets you see at a glance what numbers were drawn in Ireland, the US, France and anywhere else.
This change also allowed people to take part in lotteries from different parts of the world. There is no longer any need to feel restricted to the draws that take place in your own country, as there are dozens of big-name lotteries all over the planet.
Even more convenient than the internet are the lotto results apps that can be downloaded to mobile devices. They can be used on Android or iOS devices and you can even opt for a biometric login to keep your information completely private at all times.
All of this means that there is no longer any need to wait around before you find out if you have won a big prize. You can now simply check your phone whenever it suits you and see instantly whether the numbers pulled out of the hat match your own set. Of course, if you prefer to host a Roman-style dinner party for the occasion, no one would begrudge you that!
