Ford has announced today that a select fleet of upcoming 2020 models that carry the new SYNC 4 infotainment system will include support for Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Apple’s wireless CarPlay allows users to connect an iPhone to their in-car infotainment system wirelessly over a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection. Ford is only the second manufature to bring wireless Apple CarPlay to its models, behind BMW you first offered this feature with their own recent models.

Alternative ways to get wireless Apple CarPlay is also available through buying and installing an aftermarket Apple CarPlay headunit from makers such as Alpine, Kenwood, JVC and Pioneer. All of which offer wireless Apple CarPlay units.

With wireless Apple CarPlay becoming a highly desirable feature for car owners in Apple’s ecosystem, I am surprised that we can still count the number of manufacturers with wireless CarPlay options on a single hand. Let’s hope this begins to snowball and more makers adopt the wireless technology in their future models.
