Last Tuesday Apple had its ‘Hi, Speed.’ event, in which it revealed its annual iPhone update in the form of the new iPhone 12 (from $799), iPhone 12 Mini (from $699), iPhone 12 Pro (from $999) and iPhone 12 Pro Max (from $1099) smartphones, alongside a new HomePod Mini that will retail for an amazing $99 and it will also support third-party apps.
It was a majority iPhone event, and that was expected, yet from the announcements came a number of CarPlay related titbits…
Siri Suggestions on CarPlay
With a deeper integration of Apple’s smart home platform, HomeKit, you will now be able to send Siri Suggestions from its new HomePod mini to your CarPlay display. The example used was ‘What time Target closes?’, and the Siri Suggestion will automatically appear on CarPlay with the route to Target already mapped out and waiting for you.
Intercom on CarPlay
The new Intercom feature lets you quickly send a message announcement to any Apple device in your home. Similar to making an announcement on Google Home or Amazon Alexa. The example Apple showcased is a father using Intercom in CarPlay to send an announcement to the family at home if they wanted Pizza. This message would then show on all enabled devices from iPhone, iPad, AirPods, Apple Watch and likely any other family member who’s driving in a different vehicle via CarPlay.
MagSafe for iPhone
Remember MagSafe on MacBook? Apple left this magnetic charging connection behind when they switched their MacBooks to USB-C charging. Apple has revived this feature for iPhone in the form of powering your iPhone through a magnetic array that circles the charging coil inside your iPhone. Not only will it aid alignment of the charging coil in your it also opens a number of possibilities for mounting and charging your iPhone in the car too.
The first MagSafe accessory for the vehicle was shown during the Apple Keynote with a brief showing of the Belkin MagSafe Car Vent Mount Pro, which is an air vent car mount solution reimagined for the new iPhone 12. It features intuitive cable management (it will NOT wirelessly charge your iPhone by the look of it), and being magnetic you can mount the iPhone easily with a single hand in both portrait and landscape orientation. The MagSafe Car Vent Mount Pro will retail for $39.95 and will be available to buy Winter 2020.
I look forward to the number of mounting solutions for the car that will adopt the new MagSafe for iPhone technology, it seems like a perfect solution for mounting and charging accessories in the car and around the home.
