Apple has released the next update for its iOS 11 Beta last night, and those brave enough to install Apple’s work in progress software have shared some of the new features that have found their way into CarPlay (thanks guys!).
New Signal Strength Bars
Apple’s signal dots were so iOS 10. In iOS 11 Apple has now replaced the signal strength dots with more traditional signal bars, as seen on other mobile platforms. iOS 11 Beta 1 still had the dots in the CarPlay side bar, but this has now been carried over to CarPlay in Beta 2.
Apple Maps – Lane Guidance
iOS 11 will bring new life into Apple Maps, and Beta 1 saw the implementation of a rework UI and the addition of Speed Limits. Beta 2 now features the other headline feature that was mentioned during the WWDC keynote – lane guidance. We saw this shown on the phone, but not in CarPlay. Now in Beta 2, we can see how it looks on CarPlay specifically, which isn’t too bad. I still think the bottom left UI has some work left to do on it, as it still looks a little too temporary for an Apple designed product.
Do Not Disturb Whilst Driving
Apple’s new ‘auto respond whilst on the move’ feature has improved, with new features in the Settings area, which includes the ability to tailor how DNDWD interacts with you and the people/apps that alert you when you’re behind the wheel. Quick access to DNDWD has also been added in the Control Center.
iOS 11 will continue to improve over the months until its release, some time in September/October. I think we are probably one more release away from a Public Beta, as Apple usually announce Public Betas at the same time as a developer beta release. Stability has improved in Beta 2, and I am sure this will also carry over on to CarPlay mode too.
