Apple Blocked Volkswagen From Showcasing Wireless CarPlay

VW CarPlay

We all wanted it to happen, but sadly neither of the manufactures, nor OEMs, managed to demonstrate Apple’s Wireless CarPlay in factory-fitted vehicles or in aftermarket receivers at this year’s CES 2016. If reports are true, this might have been due to Apple.

It has been reported today that Apple prevented Volkswagen from demoing Wireless CarPlay at this year’s consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.

“We wanted to demonstrate wireless CarPlay and the owner of CarPlay technology didn’t allow us to,” Volkmar Tannerberger, head of electrical and electronic development at Volkswagen, told Car and Driver.

Currently, Wireless CarPlay hasn’t been widely adopted since it has been ‘software ready’ last year when iOS 9 was released onto Apple iPhone devices. Rumours of changing protocol between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, along with data security concerns over wireless, have all been said to be causes of the delay in Wireless CarPlay appearing in new vehicles and aftermarket receivers.

Although Mr Tannerberger didn’t explain why Volkswagen wasn’t allow to demo the wireless user experience, it might be that Apple would prefer to demonstrate their Wireless CarPlay first, most likely at this year’s WWDC event in June, and maybe another manufacturer might have struct a deal on showcasing the technology first in their vehicles – BMW perhaps?

Exclusive showcases aside, this didn’t stop global automotive electronics supplier, Visteon, from demoing Wireless CarPlay at the show!

With rumours of the new iPhone 7 having the ability to charge wirelessly also, we may see both Wireless CarPlay and wireless charging iPhones announced this fall. We’ll have more on Wireless CarPlay as soon as we hear more.
