Adapters & Cables Shown in This Video
Satechi Mobile Pro USB-C Hub
Aukey 8-in-1 USB-C Hub
Anker 7-in-1 USB-C Hub
MAX Group HDMI to USB-C Cable This didn’t work with Netflix but wasn’t HDCP 2.2 compatible
UNI HDMI to USB-C HDCP 2.2 Cable This advertised 2.2 cable didn’t work either with Netflix
Both adapters were able to connect my iPhone to my CarPlay display, however, both seem to handle the display output very differently. The CarlinKit will stretch to fill the screen most of the time, whilst the Ottocast will shrink the feed slightly and display black borders at the top and bottom. Some of the HDMI hubs can also make the experience worse, whilst I found some hubs like the Satechi and HDMI cable methods were the better ways to connect to an iPhone, some HDMI hubs from Aukey and Anker seem to window the output or have a very poor frame rate.
Those wishing to carry out the cable (or hub) method, should look out for HDCP 2.2 or higher compatibility. This ‘should’ allow copy-protected apps like Netflix, HULU and others to work over the HDMI feed. I later found this out after already buying the cable in this video, so I went and purchased another with HDCP 2.2 support which also didn’t work, so I will try a 2.3 cable and report back as soon as it arrives and tested.
