Pioneer USA Inc. has released firmware updates for its AppRadio 4 (SPH-DA120) and NEX head units. These updates can be downloaded from the Pioneer support pages online. No news yet on Europe getting these updates, I’ve reached out and there is no news yet, plus I was told it isn’t recommended to update your European receiver with this US/Canadian firmware update, as it could cause ‘irreversible damage.’

AppRadio 4 (SPH-DA120) firmware 1.11 contains:

  • Stability improvements for Bluetooth
  • Minor bug fixes

Has anyone tried to install the US version of the firmware on a EU unit? I’m wondering because I’d really like to have the latest firmware as I’m hoping that the minor bug fixes do fix some annoying issues and problems I’ve been facing on my unit.

“Done. Still fully works with firmware 1.11 on my European unit. Just the bluetooth firmware is 3.21.3 like before. Do the US units have a newer one? A manual update didn’t changed this.”

Thx for the info, might try this myself, although I’m scared because of warranty void…

Did you do it? Did it work??

          • Darko Herak

Yes, but not much is changed or rather i didn’t notice any relevant changes really… It really needs much more fixes in my opinion. A few tweaks would come a long way 🙂

Issue for me is mine is on 1.08 and I have an iPhone 6 on latest iOS. I can’t get CarPlay working at all 😐
I’m going to try a different cable today and see if that works.

          • Darko Herak

To be honest I didn’t mess around with CarPlay really. I got it mostly for the playing through USB stick. I don’t want to have to play my music through my phone really. It is nice for guest which are driving in your car if they want to play something, but I haven’t really tried it really and have an android phone so I wouldn’t be able to help you as well… Try the upgrade and another cable, the upgrade gave me no problems at all.

I was really surprised when I plugged in my iPhone for the first time into a newly installed unit that the radio automatically marked it as “iPod1” and displayed the builtin interface (iPod compatibility).
After I switched the device type to “iPhone” in settings > Input / Output settings > Smartphone setup the Carplay logo was displayed on the home screen.

  • They have been a bit slow to sort this update out. I’ll see if I can get a response on this from Pioneer.

I just had my AppRadio 4 installed and it says the firmware is 1.12. I checked on Pioneer’s site and it still lists 1.11 as the most recent. Wonder why no one has access to it yet or what bugs they fixed.
